Do you have an overweight child?
If so, please help him or her. Your child shouldn't be subjected to such a drastically increased risk of killer diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes, that are direct results of obesity.
Aside from the ridicule from playmates and peers, they also suffer major physical limitations . So often they carry much of the childhood obesity problems into adulthood.
Studies have shown that most overweight children grow up to be overweight adults. In addition to weight control problems, they suffer from joint problems...especially knees and hips. Being overweight causes more wear and tear on the joints.
My daughter is a school nurse. Nurses will tell you that there is an alarming rate of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes among overweight school children today. High levels of obesity are leading to signs of heart disease at much younger ages. In additon to chronic, scary diseases already becoming prevalent among children, overweight children also have a tendency to be sick more often.
Overweight children suffer socially as well. They are less likely to be accepted by their peers.
They are less likely to be able to enjoy sports and other physical activities.
Unfortunately, the epdemic of obesity among children is still growing despite the fact that schools recognize the problem and are taking steps to fix it.
Today about 25 million U.S. kids - nearly one in three - are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. If obesity trends continue, children today could become the first generation in American history to live shorter lives than their parents.
So what can you do about it?
There are secveral things you can do to help our children prevent and overcome obesity:
1. Make sure they have a healthy diet at home...lots of green leafy vegetables, plenty of fiber,
less red meat and more fish or skinless chicken , plenty of fluids excluding sodas or sugar filled
drinks.
2. Make sure they get plenty of exercise. Encourage them to spend as much time outdoors when
the weather permits. Even cold weather outdoors is fine as long as it's not severe. Children
who spend more time outdoors engaged in activities have fewer weight problems.
Encourage outdoor activities by getting involved with them.
3. Limit the time they're allowed to spend on computer and electronic game activities.
Remember, adults are responsible for their children until their children are out from under their care. With that responsibility comes accountability. Adults must be held largely accountable for their childrens' obesity problems.
Childhood obesity is scary because it sets the stage for so many illnesses.
Love your children and do your best for them. Set them up for a long healthy life.
